Does anyone have advice for a college student?
or suggestions for a
first time college
female student?

I will be a first time (female) college student in the fall of 2006 and I wanted any advice or suggestions that could help me with my first year.Does anyone have advice for a college student?

College will offer many new freedom.

Professors are not like HS teachers. They will hold your hands and request for projects that you forgot to do. They will give you a syllabus (class objective and requirements) at the beginning of the semester, pay attention to the due dates. Some professors will not accept late work or penalize you for late work.

College classes are not like HS classes. Some professors will only give one mid term and one final exam that will test your knowledge of the subject for the entire semester. This is challenging for some HS students that are used to tests every two weeks for what you learned two weeks ago.

Take a lighter class load (12 credits) to start off. I suggest taking 3 required classes and one that you pick for yourself. Take your required classes early in your college career. It sucks to take them during your senior year.

Find a major and stick with it. Most graduates do not even work in their major. Work hard and graduate with a good GPA. A good GPA will lead to an easier time looking for work. If you GPA is great, the employers might be looking for you instead of you interviewing for jobs.

Hanging out is fun, but can be bad for your grades and your chance of finishing college. I have seen many friends party and drop out of college.

Remember...

Careful with new freedom

Read syllabus and follow due dates

Take good notes

Light class load for first semester

Watch out for your friends

Pick a major and stick with it

Graduate with good GPA

Don't lose control of yourself. A lot of people first enter college and go insane with their new-found freedom after leaving their parents house. Don't go crazy with sex and drugs, and don't do things you'll regret just because you can. Yes, you should try to have fun, but for God's sakes, remember the good lessons your parents taught you and make sure you behave like a responsible adult.
First things first--don't get in over your head. The start of college is a bit difficult at times, and you don't want to overburden yourself with classes while you transition--try to make it easy on yourself to fit in.

As well, look for the clubs at your college. Clubs tend to look good on a resume straight out of college, and also give you a group of people to make friends with, based on a common interest. I'd suggest joining at least 2 or 3 if you can.
you start your personal life now more then ever... so spend your time also with a practical interes... care more about friends, relations and society.. don't loose your mind and hearth on nothing...

take care of you...
The best decisions I made since I have been in college is to:

1. Live on Campus, there is no experience like be in the center of the action... so if you have the option live in a College Dorm.

2. I got involved in a campus ministry... I have met more friends and got to experience more things than I would have ever imagined without it. Greek Life doesn't even compare to the friendships I made in my campus minsitry and IT'S FREE!! Seriously check it out... I think you would be surprized!

3. ACTUALLY GO TO CLASS! Lot of my professors have bumped my grade up just because they saw me everyday... It really helps!
Live on campus

Don't drink too much and don't drink very often. I didn't drink until I was 21 and I'm very glad that I made that choice, I would encourage you to do the same.

Go to class

Do your homework

Don't piss off your roommate

Relax and be genuine with the people around you

Forget stereotyps and see every person as an individual

Take a variety of classes so that you can find where you fit best

Don't be too hard on yourself and don't bite off more than you can chew.

Join 1 or 2 extra curricular groups but no more your first quarter or semester that way you can see how much time your homework requires.

If you spend 2 hours out of class for every hour in class you will not have much problem at all with pretty much any class. There will be exceptions. There will also be classes that don't require that much work. Make it a goal though and everything will be fine.

Have fun. This period of your life only happens once, unless you have the money to go back, but even then it won't be the same because everyone will be so young.

Note that some of those things will seem obvious right now but they won't later.

Also, don't take early morning classes unless you are truely a morning person. halfway through the semester you will stop going to 8am classes and that would be bad.
