12 yr old Cairn Terrier (female) going deaf - any advice, please ?

try to use hand signals with her now so she will understand you when she loses her hearing altogether, i had a alsation who was going deaf so i started using hand signals at the same time as spoken commands, it does work she will recognise commands with just using your hands as long as she can see you bless her12 yr old Cairn Terrier (female) going deaf - any advice, please ?

Cairn Terriers are the greatest dogs. I had my Cairn Toby for 14 years and he experience significant hearing loss, but I found that it never slowed him down.

You will be amazed at how versatile dogs are. When they lose one sense they really just focus on another. My dog watched body language and eye contact. Be sure to use hand gestures to influence your dogs behaviors and help her understand. There still will be times where your Cairn will be walking away from you oblivious to your calls, but it is to be expected in old dogs and you just have to work with them.

Good luck
It will be scary for her I am sure, but she can learn to adjust. I know it is easier to lose hearing than to lose your sight. JUst keep her in her familiar surroundings, where she will be most comfortable.
what does the vet say?
