A lone man walking behind a lone female, advice please?

I am looking for advice please, from females, about a quandary I have come across. I have just moved to a new area, and when walking home I have to walk along a badly lit pathway. I am quite a quick walker and find that sometimes there will be a few women/girls walking on the same path, on their own, either walking at a normal pace or slowly. Now I am left with a dilemma.

My main concern is I want her to feel safe, and I pose no threat, but am left wondering, do I walk slower and risk her thinking she's been followed, or do I quicken my pace even more to get passed her, thus making her feel nervous that something is going to happen?

Also, if I am trying the walk passed approach, how quickly do I move back in front of the lady?

Any suggestions would be welcome, thanks.A lone man walking behind a lone female, advice please?
Just walk normally!

People get afraid in the dark, so unless your all open and smiley and dressed in ';happy'; clothes, then chances are they'll see you as a threat

Just chill out, don't hide your features or look too serious, walk in a relaxed way and just don't regulate your walking too much - don't start keeping to her pace hahaA lone man walking behind a lone female, advice please?
This is in the wrong section.

However, I have experienced the same dilemma. Back when I was a smoker I used to stop and have a cigarette to let the lone girl/women get ahead of me.
Chill, if you're not going to do anything then nothing's going to happen. She can't call the police or anything. If you're so worried take a route on a main road.
dude chill out and ignore the lady.

if yu say nothing is gonna happen then nothin is gonna happen.

she cant call the police if yu didnt do nothing

just be normal or cross over to the other side
why dont you cross the road onto the other pavement and walk at your normal speed. this should eliminate any percieved threat from the women.
Perhaps you should cross over the road, this will let her know you have no bad intentions.
this sounds like something from curb your enthusiasm
not sure why its in this section?

i am a very confident woman but this happened about 2yrs ago to me.I was walking home from a meeting (10mins walk) along a main street when someone I passed started to follow me. He started walking quicker and this REALLY scared me - I am sure he was a threat, I'd seen him earlier that evening in the same area.

i ended up going to a nearby nursing home - and had to phone my husband to get me. I did actually phone police to express worries.

This man did not say or do anything but I've never been as scared - Now i take much more notice of where I'm walking / keep myself safe

my suggestion would be to slow down and keep the same distance between you .
